Founder Henry Sy, Sr. opens a shoe store called Shoemart along Rizal Avenue and then a second store in Carriedo, Manila.
1950s-1960s
Sy introduces the concept of fixed pricing, air-conditioned stores, and glass displays to better attract customers.
1950s-1960s
Sy travels extensively, learning what he can about the retail industry including the latest fashion trends.
1960
Holding firm SM Investments Corporation is established.
1963
With Sy’s vision of bringing business to Makati, Shoemart Makati opens with big possibilities.
1967
Shoemart Cubao opens in 1967.
1969
Sy ventures outside of retail by building the Manila Royal Hotel in Echague, Manila with a revolving restaurant.
1972
Shoemart Manila on Calle Echague is transformed into the first department store.
1975
Shoemart is rechristened as SM.
1976
SM buys Acme Savings Bank to be renamed later as BDO.
1976
SM Food Center (now SM Food Court) opens to complement the store in SM Makati.
1980
SM Cubao, the department store, opens.
1983
Sy establishes SM Foundation, Inc.
1984
SM Department Store opens in Harrison, Manila.

From “We’ve Got it All,” the SM jingle evolves to “We’ve Got it All for You!”

While the country is plunged into one of the most turbulent periods of political and economic history, Sy opens SM North EDSA, the first shopping mall spanning 125,000 square meters making it the biggest and most modern commercial structure that pioneers a one-stop shop concept in the country.

The first SM Supermarket opens.
1988
Seeing huge potential in tourism, Sy acquires Taal Vista Hotel.
1990
SM opens SM City Sta. Mesa, also known as SM Centerpoint, envisioned to become the lifestyle center for young students due to its highly strategic location.
1991
SM Megamall opens spearheading what is now known as the malling phenomenon in the Philippines.
1992
SM Megamall launches the country’s first indoor Olympic-size ice skating rink, a breakthrough in a tropical country.
1993
SM Cebu, SM’s first provincial mall, opens.
1993
The SM Foundation Scholarship Program is launched.
1994
SM Prime Holdings, Inc. is incorporated to become the vehicle for SM’s mall operations. It goes public this year to enhance funding capabilities and increase SM Prime’s growth momentum in mall development.
1995
SM opens the neighborhood store Savemore Market to bring SM closer to its customers.
2001
SM City Xiamen, the first SM mall in China opens.
2001
SM Hypermarket, a combination of supermarket and department store, opens.
2004
SM Cares, a division of SM Foundation that handles the corporate social responsibilities of SM Prime, is established.
2005
SM Investments goes public and is considered the largest Initial Public Offering during this time.
2006
SM Mall of Asia, envisioned to be the premier destination mall in the Asia Pacific region, opens spanning 400,000 square meters.
2006
SMDC launches its first high-rise project, Mezza Residences.
2007
SM Foundation launches Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan Farmers’ Training Program to update farmers’ agricultural knowledge and teach them sustainable farming and financial literacy.
2007
SM launches Hamilo Coast, a large-scale eco-tourism project in Batangas with 13 natural coves and a 31-kilometer coastline.
2007
SM Hotels and Convention Corp. is established to oversee various hotel investments of the group in line with SM’s tourism initiatives.
2008
Felicidad T. Sy Foundation, a religious arm, is established.
2008
SM commemorates its 50th Anniversary.
2008
SM acquires majority ownership of National University.
2012
The Mall of Asia Arena opens with a two-day concert of five-time Grammy Award winner Lady Gaga.
2014
SM Prime Holdings installs 5,760 solar panels, capable of generating up to 1.5- Megawatts power equivalent to that of 1,000 households. The solar panels, found on the rooftop of SM North EDSA, can light up all the 16,000 lighting fixtures, 59 escalators and 20 elevators of the mall.
2015
SM Seaside City Cebu, opens as the region’s newest landmark.
2016
In partnership with Autism Society Philippines, SM Markets starts a workplace inclusion program for persons with autism (PWAs) called "AutiSM at Work."
2016
SM Investments announces the merger of its retail arm, SM Retail, with several related companies that will include a diverse portfolio of food, household appliances, DIY, furniture, apparel, footwear, pharmaceuticals/cosmetics and specialty retailing stores.

SM celebrates its 60th year.
